On Our Backs

synopsis

Off the back of an arts council DYCP grant I began researching further into archives, how we can use archives to create new work and forge legacy for queer individuals, their stories and their art.

Drawing from archival research at the Bishopsgate Institute, On Our Backs takes inspiration from the iconic lesbian, 1980s magazine of the same name. Using its print articles and images, the performance will interrogate and celebrate my obsession and experience with queer dyke femme expression, identity, and desire. Blending movement, lipsync, collage and cabaret-style elements, it will bring the magazine’s groundbreaking, humorous, and provocative stories to life. Engaging with the audience directly, OOB invites participation in exploring the same questions and ideas that defined the spirit of the original publication.

On our backs is a performance piece to be platformed in theatres and galleries and I hope to eventually take the show on tour around the UK before europe to participate and learn from the more experimental, groundbreaking practices of european artists and producers.
